October 4, 2019 By Jimmy Huss 15 Comments

What’s the first thing that comes into your mind thinking about vacationing in Bali? For me, it’s pristine beaches, lakes surrounded by mountains, beautiful temples in the jungle, and all the Bali hidden gems. But, the island is not just restricted to this only, there is so much more to explore and experience in Bali than we could ever imagine especially in Munduk. The best way to relish all those experiences is by hiring a scooter in Bali. Yes, you heard it right! In the starting, you might be in a double thought of exploring Bali on a scooter, but trust me, there is no better way of making the best of your Bali trip. So, as the blog title itself suggests, let’s talk about renting a scooter in Bali.

Who is eligible to hire a scooter in Bali?

Anyone who holds an international driving license can hire a scooter from Bali rentals. Since the tourism scene of Bali is on its peak, hence, policemen can be seen in every corner of the island. There are chances that they can pull you over and will ask you for your license. Hence, it is advisable to carry your license under your seat or in your wallet. Your country’s license will not be enough. You can obtain your Bali scooter license (international license) from the police station. For that, you will need to submit a few documents, namely:

  • Passport with a valid Bali visa
  • Valid driving license of your home country.
  • If you choose to avail of the services of an agent, you will not be asked other documents like KITAS (Indonesian permanent residency), a medical certificate, and several tests. The only thing that will affect the inclusion of an agent is the price.

Safety driving Indonesia

This is the most basic thing we are taught in our childhood. Considering the safety first, you must not ignore the importance of wearing a helmet. It will not just save you from an unwanted conversation with the traffic officer, but also ensure your complete safety. If you are not provided a helmet( You should be) you can go shopping and pick one up in Ubud center or at any of the markets in Canggu or Ubud Art Market.

Police in Bali

Being a foreigner, there are greater chances that you will be pulled over by a traffic police officer while riding a scooter in Bali. Since corruption is rampant in Bali, hence, the police officers see foreign people as a source of their good payday. Also, there is a fact that so many foreigners are actually breaking traffic rules in Bali. Even after doing nothing wrong, you’re getting pulled over, just stay calm and talk politely with the police officer and show him your international license. Even after this, if police try to make something up in order to make you give a bribe, then refuse politely. And if they continue to pressure you, ask them to speak to their superiors to report them.

The real fact is – being a foreign national if you choose to rent a bike in Bali, then you are definitely going to be pulled over once. So, be prepared for it and do not make any mistake from your side.

What if you ride a scooter in Bali without a license?

There is no denying that a major chunk of tourists rents their scooters without a Bali license. This is a reason why police officers can be often seen pulling over foreigners. As per locals, the fine for not carrying a license while riding a bike in Bali is somewhere between 30,000 Rupiah and 1,00,000 Rupiah. But, foreign tourists who have caught in the same situation have been asked to pay as much as 5,00,000 Rupiah. Hence, whenever you will fall in a similar situation, then instead of bribing them, asked for the fine slip. In that way, you will not have to pay the bribe to them.

Do you need Indonesia insurance along with a license?

Well, unlike most of the foreign countries, in Indonesia, you will not be asked for insurance if you wish to rent a scooter. Though you can get insurance, there is a tendency that most accidents are dealt on the spot only by the people. Your scooter rental agent will not help you in dealing with an accident or insurance either. For the ones having travel insurance, there are high chances that any accident on a rental scooter would not be covered by the insurance company. So, it would be great if you get the insurance that will cover such damages.

Where can I rent a scooter in Bali?

Almost all the tourist areas boast the facility of renting a scooter in Bali. But, the best option is hiring a scooter or bike from your hotel itself. Most of the hotels in Bali provide scooters/bikes on rent to tourists. Hence, you can also ask your hotel to arrange one for you. If you are on a budget Bali trip, then it is advisable to consider your hotel for renting a bike. There are chances that you are more likely to get a better rental price from them. However, make sure while renting it, you do a deep inspection of the scooter/bike. Also, take pictures of the scooter so that they can’t force any old damage on you.

**Bonus: If you have time, take a nice ride down to Uluwatu and check out the best sunset one the whole island. Karang Boma is an incredible cliffside location to relax for a very cheap price, its truly a Bali hidden gem.**

Scooter In Bali

How much will it cost to rent Scooter in Bali?

The rental cost of Bali bike totally depends on the time period for which you are going to keep the bike. Surprisingly, the longer the period is, the cheaper the rent will be. Despite this, motorbike rental Bali is still cheaper in Indonesia compared to other renowned travel destinations in the world.

For a simple, scooter Bali, the rental cost for foreigners per-day in Bali is somewhere around 50,000 to 60,000 IDR. Honda scooters are the best option. Better ones will certainly cost you more, maybe somewhere around 1,00,000 IDR per day.  Besides, the monthly rate starts from 10,00,000 and can go up to 20,00,000 IDR.

A thing to know here that most they will ask you to pay entirely in advance, which means no deposit. You just have to pay the entire amount for the number of days you agree on while hiring the scooter.

Travel is bigger than just us taking a trip. ⁣
⁣
To me It’s about helping people, learning about the cultures, and sharing them with the world. When I first arrived on a Sunday I was walking the streets of #istanbul🇹🇷 and couldn’t find any businesses open, actually after talking to some locals they said the only businesses allowed open were government-run restaurants, shops, and stores. The locally run shops weren’t allowed open on weekends and The local Turkish people weren’t even allowed outside on Saturdays and Sundays only the tourist were. ⁣
⁣
It was was their best effort to stop the spread of Covid. A street that receives 3 million people a day is now a ghost town(swipe right). I was really worried that it would be like that the whole trip. ⁣
⁣
Now that Monday rolls around you can see life in the city again smiles in the streets, children playing and helping their siblings (swipe right). Just know that this series coming up is more than sharing what I learn but helping people that need it in a time that’s hard for everyone.⁣
⁣
Support local business, help a friend in need and be kind to everyone. You never know when you will need help.⁣
⁣
Love you all and thank you for being here supporting this community. ⁣

Went to see the sunrise and saw a snowstorm.⁣
⁣
First time in my life I got to see a snowstorm and in Asia and Europe all on the same day! Did you know this was possible?⁣
⁣
In the last 30 days, I have completely filled up a brand new 2TB hard drive. These two series are the most in-depth ones yet and I am so happy that I got to see snow and sunshine in both Serbia and Turkey all in one trip. Most of the time it takes two trips to see both sides of a city but we got to see snow in both. Ironically both snow days were on my last day in each country.⁣

Serbia blessed us with snow on the last day of the trip I’m hoping Istanbul will do the same!⁣
⁣
Feeling fresh, excited, and motivated. With the first trip of the year under the belt, I’m excited to get back home and continue to push out these two series.⁣
⁣
Where should I travel to next?⁣
⁣
@jrherrm and I will be in Puerto Rico soon so as long as things go as planned you can expect at least one video from there but if it doesn’t open in time where should we go?!⁣
